THE SAUCE KEEPS IT SIMPLE
Two chicken orders.
One kept things simple.
The other brought a little bit of everything.
On paper, the more complicated option should have had the advantage.
At the table?
Simple won.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
There were a few couples eating inside when we arrived at Luna Grill in Stevenson Ranch.
It wasn’t overly busy.
The restaurant had a relaxed feel, and we settled in with two very different approaches to lunch.
I ordered the Chicken Kabob Plate.
My dining companion chose the Santorini Bowl with chicken.
Same restaurant.
Same protein.
Very different results.
THE CHICKEN KABOB PLATE
The Chicken Kabob Plate came with rice, pita bread and tzatziki sauce.
For my side, I chose the Greek salad.
Nothing overly complicated.
Just a straightforward plate of food that worked.
The chicken was cooked nicely and, importantly, wasn’t dry.
It had good flavour on its own, but the best combination was the chicken with the tzatziki sauce.
That was the bite I kept going back to.
The cool, creamy tzatziki made the chicken even better, while the rice and pita gave everything else somewhere useful to go.
The Greek salad worked well on the side and helped make this feel like a complete meal without overcrowding the plate.
No unnecessary distractions.
No ingredient fighting for attention.
Just well-cooked chicken and the right things around it.
If I returned tomorrow, this is probably what I would order again.
THE SANTORINI BOWL
Across the table, the Santorini Bowl had much more going on.
Chicken.
Rice.
Couscous.
Hummus.
Tzatziki.
Kale.
Olives.
Pickled onions.
And several other ingredients brought together in one bowl.
It certainly wasn’t short on variety.
The response, however, was more reserved.
The bowl was OK.
There wasn’t anything particularly wrong with it, but there also wasn’t one element that made it stand out.
With so many ingredients involved, we expected something to take control.
Nothing quite did.
My dining companion would probably choose one of the chicken plates next time.
Sometimes more ingredients create more excitement.
Sometimes they just create more ingredients.
THE DAMAGE
Roasted Garlic Lemon Chicken Kabob Plate: $17.49
Chicken Santorini Bowl: $16.99
Total before tax: $34.48
THE VERDICT
Luna Grill gave us two different versions of essentially the same decision.
The Santorini Bowl offered more variety.
The Chicken Kabob Plate offered more reason to return.
The chicken was cooked well, the Greek salad was a good choice, and the combination of chicken and tzatziki was easily the highlight of the visit.
The bowl wasn’t bad.
It simply couldn’t compete with a plate that knew exactly what it wanted to be.
Chicken.
Rice.
Pita.
Salad.
Tzatziki.
Nothing flashy.
Nothing complicated.
Sometimes simple wins.
SAUCE SUMMARY
Best For: A relaxed, straightforward Mediterranean meal.
Order: The Chicken Kabob Plate with Greek salad.
Standout: The chicken and tzatziki combination.
Good to Know: The Santorini Bowl offers plenty of variety, but the simpler plate made the stronger impression on this visit.
Return Visit: Yes. I already know what I’m ordering.
SECRET SAUCE SCORE:

BURRITO BELT CHAMPIONSHIP – ENTRY 19
THE SAUCE QUESTIONS THE RULES
Casa Vieja had completely escaped my attention.
Until the Burrito Belt sent me looking.
I arrived late on a Monday night and ordered the usual carne asada burrito.
The first few bites revealed one of the strongest parts of this contender.
But the first cut also exposed a familiar problem.
And this time, it wasn’t just about the score.
After 19 entries, Casa Vieja may have uncovered a much bigger issue with the entire competition.
Two distinct burrito styles have emerged.
And judging them by the same rules is becoming increasingly difficult.
Did Casa Vieja challenge the leaderboard—or change the future of the Burrito Belt?
SMOKE WARS – ENTRY #4
Rattlers Bar B Que
26945 Golden Valley Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91350
THE SAUCE STAYS IN THE FAMILY
Rattlers entered Smoke Wars with something the other contenders didn’t have.
History.
It has been a family favorite for years.
But liking a restaurant is one thing.
Putting every meat, side and spoonful of BBQ sauce through the Pitmaster Scorecard is another.
The tri tip divided attention from the chicken.
One side outscored every meat on the table.
And when the family’s scores were added together, the top of the standings was suddenly within reach.
Did an old family favorite become the new Smoke Wars leader?
WHAT’S COOKING IN SCV
Openings, events and things worth knowing.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23: SPOOKY SEASON GETS CREATIVE
Friday night is getting a Halloween makeover.
Painting with a Twist in Santa Clarita is hosting a Haunted Night painting session from 7–9pm, giving locals a chance to trade the usual Friday plans for brushes, paint and a little spooky creativity.
Tickets range from $39–$49.
Dinner before painting? Now that's a Friday night plan.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24: FOOD, GAMES + A LITTLE COMPETITION
Come hungry. Apparently, there's a competition involved.
The Ball Family Fun Day is taking over the SCV Hub with more than 25 vendors, family games, music and a food-eating competition.
There'll also be special food combos, prizes and plenty of reasons to stick around.
It runs 4–8pm at 23460 Cinema Drive.
Eating competitively?
Finally, a sport we can get behind.
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 25: WINE, PAINT + HALLOWEEN VIBES
Sunday plans just got a little more colorful.
Kindred Spirits Wine Bar is hosting Corks and Canvas, a Halloween-themed painting class with a wine-bar setting.
The two-hour session runs 4–6pm at 24510 Town Center Drive.
A little creativity. A little wine. A Sunday afternoon well spent.
We'd call that a pretty good pairing.
ON NEXT WEEK’S MENU
The Sauce Goes for Dim Sum
Next week, we’re heading out for dim sum.
Dumplings.
Buns.
And enough small plates to cover the table.
The baskets may be small.
But the expectations are not.
Another Burrito Belt Challenger
Another carne asada burrito enters the competition.
The leaderboard is set.
The standard is high.
And every remaining contender has fewer chances to make an impact.
Can the next burrito shake up the standings?
Time for Tea
We’re stopping by a local tea spot to see what’s brewing.
One visit.
A new drink to try.
And another chance to discover something worth ordering again.
Will this cup bring the Sauce?
