SMOKE WARS – ENTRY #4

Rattlers Bar B Que
26945 Golden Valley Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91350

Smoke Wars rolled into its fourth contender.

But this one came with history.

Rattlers Bar B Que.

This wasn’t a first visit.

Rattlers has been a family favourite for years, and we’ve eaten here plenty of times before.

This time, however, we weren’t simply ordering dinner.

We were judging it.

I picked up the takeaway on a Sunday evening, and the restaurant was busy.

To be fair, Rattlers seems to be busy every time we visit.

Always a promising sign.

The food came home.

The family gathered around.

And the scoring began.

THE ORDER

Three meats.

Baby back ribs.

Chicken breast.

Tri tip.

Then came the sides.

Baked beans.

Mashed potatoes.

Corn bread.

Garlic bread.

And, of course, the BBQ sauce.

This was a family effort.

Everyone had an opinion.

Smoke Wars was ready.

THE BABY BACK RIBS

The baby back ribs are one of the dishes we’ve always enjoyed at Rattlers.

Tender.

Full of flavour.

And falling off the bone.

Exactly what you want from ribs.

They delivered another solid performance.

No surprises.

No complaints.

Just good ribs.

THE CHICKEN BREAST

Chicken breast can become dry very quickly.

Rattlers avoided that problem.

The chicken was really juicy and ended up being one of the strongest meats on the table.

It was cooked well.

Full of flavour.

And proof that chicken breast doesn’t have to be the safe or forgettable part of a BBQ order.

Rattlers got it right.

THE TRI TIP

The tri tip was probably the family favourite.

We ordered it medium rare.

That’s exactly how it arrived.

Tender.

Cooked properly.

And full of good flavour.

The family rated it highly.

Personally, I enjoy Rattlers’ tri tip more on the day than I do the next day.

For me, it loses a little something as leftovers.

Fresh from Rattlers, though?

Very good.

THE SIDES

The highest-scoring item on the entire table wasn’t one of the meats.

It was the baked beans.

Sweet.

Rich.

And a big family favourite.

They worked perfectly with the smoky meats and BBQ sauce and were, once again, one of the first sides to disappear.

The mashed potatoes kept things simple.

Soft.

Smooth.

Cooked well.

Nothing overly complicated.

Just a dependable side that belonged next to the BBQ.

Then came the corn bread.

This is probably my personal favourite side at Rattlers.

It was soft and slightly sweet, with jalapeños on top adding a little spice.

That sweet-and-spicy combination worked really well.

It’s also one of those sides I can keep eating without really noticing.

A dangerous quality in corn bread.

Finally, the garlic bread.

Good flavour.

Good texture.

And another solid addition to the table.

It worked nicely with the meat and BBQ sauce.

Exactly what it needed to do.

THE BBQ SAUCE

The BBQ sauce also delivered.

It had a good balance of sweetness and richness and worked well with almost everything we ordered.

With three different meats and four sides involved, the sauce had plenty of work to do.

It handled the job.

THE PITMASTER SCORECARD

The Pitmaster Scorecard produced an average of 7.8/10, giving Rattlers Bar B Que an official Smoke Wars Score:

THE VERDICT

There wasn’t really a weak part of the meal.

The chicken was juicy.

The tri tip was the family favorite.

The baked beans earned the highest score of the entire order.

And the corn bread remained one of my personal highlights.

But the real strength of Rattlers was its consistency.

Every meat and every side contributed.

Nothing dragged the scorecard down.

This was very much a family effort, and when all the scores were counted, our long-time favorite had done enough.

Rattlers didn’t just enter Smoke Wars.

It went straight to the top.

PITMASTER CUP STANDINGS

A familiar restaurant.

A full family scorecard.

And a new Smoke Wars leader.

Sometimes the best contender is the one that has been sitting at your family table all along.
