THE SAUCE REPORT: AYUTHAYA THAI
Ayuthaya Thai Cuisine
26879 Bouquet Canyon Rd, Santa Clarita.

Full disclosure: we ate this for breakfast.
Not because we planned to. Our kitchen is currently being remodeled, which means the usual rules about what qualifies as breakfast have gone out the window. When the choice was leftover Thai or cereal, Thai won. Comfortably.
That turned out to be the second excellent decision we'd made.
Ayuthaya Thai Cuisine sits tucked away in a plaza, the sort of place you'd drive past a hundred times without realising one of Santa Clarita's best Thai restaurants is hiding inside. We arrived early to a quiet dining room, where the owner greeted us with a smile before watching us order enough food for what probably looked like a family of four.
Six dishes between two people.
Ambitious? Absolutely.
Necessary? Also absolutely.
The Tom Kha stole the show. Creamy coconut milk, fragrant lemongrass, galangal and tender chicken came together in a soup that somehow managed to feel rich without ever becoming heavy. We'd order it again in a heartbeat.
The Pineapple Curry wasn't far behind. Fresh pineapple folded into a creamy coconut curry sounds like it shouldn't work as well as it does, but the sweetness and spice balance each other beautifully.
My partner in crime immediately claimed the Garlic Shrimp Hawaiian Style. Succulent shrimp coated in a garlic butter sauce, topped with a perfectly fried egg, earned an instant verdict across the table: "This is excellent." She wasn't wrong.
The Pad See Ew delivered exactly what you hope it will. Wide rice noodles, beef, broccoli and egg coated in a rich soy sauce, comforting, satisfying and executed with confidence.
Orange Chicken rounded out the savoury dishes with crispy chicken coated in a sticky citrus glaze. It may not have been the most adventurous order of the evening, but it was done exceptionally well.
Dessert was the seasonal Mango Sticky Rice, and it disappeared almost as quickly as it arrived. Another easy recommendation while it's still available.

The remarkable thing wasn't that one dish stood out.
It was that every dish delivered.
We kept waiting for something to miss the mark. Nothing did.
If Ayuthaya Thai Cuisine is the benchmark for Thai food in Santa Clarita, then the standard is higher than we expected.

Secret Sauce Score:

BURRITO BELT CHAMPIONSHIP - ENTRY 4
La Botana Mexican Antojitos
18748 Soledad Canyon Rd, Canyon Country.

La Botana doesn't feel like a sit-down restaurant. It feels like the kind of place that started life as a taco truck before graduating to four walls.
Small, no frills and proudly Mexican, there's just enough seating if you want to eat in, but the steady stream of takeaway orders tells you what most people are here for. When I visited at lunchtime, a group of teenagers were waiting on their food while the owner worked the counter himself, taking orders, cooking and keeping everything moving without missing a beat. It's the sort of place that's built a local following rather than a social media one.
I ordered the usual: a carne asada burrito with everything.
A few minutes later I walked out with a weighty foil-wrapped burrito, a bag of tortilla chips and two house salsas: one roja, one verde.
The burrito was properly loaded. Carne asada, rice, beans, cheese and salsa, all packed tightly into a wrap that looked more than capable of handling the job.
Now, for the scores.
La Botana’s Score:

FOUR DOWN. TWELVE TO GO
A quarter of the Burrito Belt Championship is complete. Here's how the table looks after four contenders.

THE SAUCE EXPRESS - STOP 1 - WE LOUNGE
Let me set the scene.
There is a coffee at Philz called the Mint Mojito.
It's iced. It's cold brew. It's packed with fresh mint. And it has absolutely no business being as good as it is.
I call it a coffee cocktail.
It's my benchmark. The drink every coffee shop in Santa Clarita is quietly being measured against, whether they know it or not.
So this new column has one simple mission:
Can anywhere in the SCV give me that same feeling?
The kind of drink that makes the stop non-negotiable.
First up: We Lounge.
We Lounge is exactly the sort of café you hope to stumble across. Small, cosy and thoughtfully put together rather than trying too hard. It also shares its space with Wide Eye Lounge, an eyewear boutique, meaning you can browse for new glasses while waiting for your latte. Odd on paper. Surprisingly natural in practice.
I asked the staff what they recommended, and after mentioning I was leaning towards matcha, I was pointed straight to the Blushing Matcha. The reasoning? The rose adds just enough sweetness without overwhelming the drink.
Good recommendation.
So I ordered two.
Purple Haze
Ube Latte • 16oz • $6.25
Sweet, smooth and every bit as colourful as you'd hope. The ube is unmistakable without becoming sickly, making this an easy drink to finish far quicker than intended.
Blushing Matcha
Rose Matcha • 12oz • $7.25
Delicate is the word here. The rose is present but restrained, adding floral sweetness without turning the drink into perfume. If you're nervous about rose in drinks, don't be.
The recommendation paid off.
Both drinks were genuinely enjoyable.
Neither was the Mint Mojito.
That's not a criticism. It's simply an impossibly high bar.
We Lounge isn't trying to recreate Philz. It's doing its own thing, and it does it well. The atmosphere is relaxed, the drinks are carefully made, and if sweet specialty lattes are your thing, this is a café well worth knowing about.
Is it worth the stop?
Absolutely.
The coffee cocktail I'm chasing still hasn't been found, but this is a strong opening stop on the journey.
One small disclaimer: we only sampled the hot drinks this time. The iced menu remains unexplored, which means there's every chance We'll be back to see if the cold drinks have a surprise waiting for us.
