THE SAUCE REPORT: WOLF CREEK BREWERY
Wolf Creek Brewery
27746 McBean Pkwy, Valencia.
I WENT TO DINNER ALONE AND GOT OUT CHARMED BY AN 80 YEAR OLD NAMED SPARKLES

The wife's away on a bachelorette this weekend, which left me two options: sad desk dinner, or dine out like a man who has nothing to prove.
I chose the bar.
Wolf Creek Brewery doesn't exactly sell itself from the street. Blacked-out doors, zero curb appeal, the kind of frontage that says, we don't need you.
And judging by the crowd outside, plenty of people had other plans. The tables outside the frozen yogurt place next door were packed, everyone working through their bowls like that was the main event.
More on that later.
Inside, it's a different story entirely.
Warm, lodge-like, a proper bar up front with a couple of TVs and a handful of regulars who clearly know something the sidewalk doesn't.
I took a stool.
And that's when I saw her.
Eighty years old, poised at the bar like she'd never left, and every server who walked past checked in on her like she was royalty.
Her name, I gathered from the staff, was Sparkles.
She had some.
I will state for the record, happily married, less than half her age, but I understood immediately why the staff treated her like the mayor of this bar. Elegant, composed, and clearly still capable of ruining a man's evening if she felt like it.
I didn't approach.
I didn't need to.
Some legends you just admire from two stools down.
Right. The actual review.
The bartender talked me through the menu and landed me on the ale-marinated, fire grilled tri-tip with vegetables and Cajun fries, alongside a pineapple cider cocktail.
Cider. Pineapple juice. Nothing complicated, and exactly what it needed to be.
9/10 on the drink.
If you like pineapple, this is not optional.
The tri-tip arrived fast and was cooked exactly as ordered, a proper medium-rare, juicy throughout, with the ale marinade giving the meat another layer of flavor without getting in the way of the beef.
The vegetables had been handled with more care than they usually get in this category, and the Cajun fries held their structure right to the end, no small feat.
Is it fine dining?
No.
Is it very good pub food that knows exactly what it is?
Yes.
SAUCE SUMMARY
Best For: Solo bar seats, sports in the background and a drink that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Order: Ale marinated fire grilled try-tip, pineapple cider
Skip: Judging this place from the outside.
Return Visit?: Yes. And I’ll be watching for Sparkles.

The Mystery of the 8:30pm Frozen Yogurt Crowd
I walked out of Wolf Creek and the tables outside Gold Spoon were still full.
At 8:30pm on a Saturday night.
I'd noticed the crowd on the way in, and nearly two hours later people were still coming and going.
I hadn't had dessert.
There was really only one responsible thing to do.
Investigate.
Cake batter yogurt. Three toppings: nuts, cookie dough and mini chocolate truffles.

The verdict?
A touch too sweet for me overall, but the yogurt base itself earns its reputation. The cookie dough and nuts carried the bowl.
The chocolate truffles were the weak link.

Mystery of the crowd: solved.
BURRITO BELT CHAMPIONSHIP - ENTRY 7
Mi Tierra Mexican Food and Market
17529 Sierra Hwy, #13 Santa Clarita.
Part neighborhood market, part taqueria, Mi Tierra is the sort of place where you're weaving past shelves of chips, Mexican sodas and snacks before you even reach the counter.
Beyond the market sits a simple dining room with sturdy wooden tables, a couple of TVs and a menu board stretching across the back wall with just about everything you'd expect from a proper neighborhood Mexican spot. Burritos, tortas, fajitas, seafood, tacos, if you can't find something you like here, that's probably on you.
Two women worked the line in full view, your receipt handed straight back to them as they built each order right in front of you.
No secrets here.
Watching your food being made adds a little confidence before you've taken the first bite.
By now, the order almost writes itself: a carne asada burrito with all the usual suspects.
No special requests.
No shortcuts.
Every burrito gets the same test.
There's a salsa station too.
Earlier in the Burrito Belt Championship, I'd approached one like a man trying to assemble IKEA furniture without the instructions. This time, I looked like I actually knew what I was doing.
Progress.
I also ordered a couple of tacos on the side.
That's a review for another day.
Let's get to the burrito.

THE SAUCE EXPRESS - STOP 2: DUTCH BROS
Stop number two on The Sauce Express takes us to Dutch Bros.
The mission remains the same: find a signature coffee good enough to knock Philz' Mint Mojito off the top spot.
Dutch Bros was next to take its shot.
The drive-thru was busy, but the queue never felt out of control. Even with a steady line of cars, everything moved quickly and smoothly. No confusion. No chaos. Just a well drilled operation doing exactly what it's was supposed to do.
Two drinks were on the order.
The Golden Eagle, with no added sugar.
And the Kicker the challenger stepping into the ring against the reigning champion.
Golden Eagle
Dutch Bros' best-selling drink exists for a reason.
Espresso, half and half, caramel and vanilla, finished with a caramel drizzle.
Even without the added sugar, it held its shape beautifully smooth, rich and properly balanced instead of relying on sweetness to do all the work.
I'd actually ordered this one as a surprise for my father-in-law.
He barely put it down.
Considering compliments don't come easily from him, that's about as strong an endorsement as you'll get.
Kicker
Now for the main event.
Espresso, half and half and Irish cream syrup.
This was the drink built to go toe to toe with the Mint Mojito, and credit where it's due it came closer than anything we've tried so far.
Balanced, creamy and easy to drink, but make no mistake: this is a cream first coffee. The espresso is there, but it's playing second fiddle rather than leading the show.
If you like your coffee wrapped in cream, you'll probably love it.
If you're after a coffee first drink, it's worth knowing that before you order.

The Verdict
Did it beat the Mint Mojito?
No.
Did it come closer than anyone else so far?
Absolutely.
Philz still wears the crown.
But Dutch Bros is the first café to make it look even slightly vulnerable.
Is It Worth the Stop?
Yes.
Whether you're after something dessert-like with the Golden Eagle or a genuine challenger in the Kicker, Dutch Bros delivers.
The search continues.
The Mint Mojito keeps the title.
But Dutch Bros has officially become the closest challenger yet.
